Happy Birthday, Celena

My sister, Celena turns 23 today. She tells me she enjoys my art, but I don't think she has ever seen this blog. Until today. She's very nice, always has a smile on her face when she sings, Spider Pig (her favorite song of all time).
I gave her this painting a couple months ago for her early birthday present. She likes it but thought the lines coming out of his/her face were fire. I told her it was a Poppin fish but Im not sure if she knows what they look like. Love you sisiter, Jake

Why I draw animal comics

I have always been a huge fan of DC Digests from the 1980's. These smaller size comics with more pages were ideal reading ,which contained around 100 pages for 50 cents. Why DC should revamp this size is beyond me, it would be a great marketing tool to go up against the Manga books that have been huge in the US for the past decade.
I especially like the Funny Stuff edition ( #55, picture above seems to be missing in my collection, does anyone have an extra copy they would care to depart?) In those issues Sheldon Mayer, did some of his best work such as Dizzy Dog. He also wrote and drew a number of humour comics for DC, including the features The Three Mouseketeers, "Leave it to Binky, a teenage humor book Sugar and Spike." He's an example of a story in Funny Stuff# 53, of Sheldon's taste of art and humour.

Bruno Premiani's Doom Patrol

There has been many comic books written about the masters such as Will Eisner, Jack Kirby, Robert Crumb, and Carl Barks. But I haven't seen anything on Bruno Premiani who created some of most surreal comics. He drew in style almost unknown in the US comics of the day, an European flavor with a eye of draftsmanship. I first came across Bruno's work from a cover less comic of The Doom Patrol #95, The Menace of the Turnabout Heroes, in my mid teens. Shown above is a page from that comic. What stuck me was Bruno's art had a classical style to it but a further look it was visually bizarre and hints of surrealism. For instance, here's a scene where the leader The Chief, who is in cast of a metal shell of robotman fighting the Animal-Vegetable Mineral Man. Or from the page on top Rita the Elastic Girl grows part of her body.

Bruno art style had a opposite approach to Jack Kirby. http://beingjakekujava.blogspot.com/2009/05/daredevil-43.html

Kirby exemplified the lack of confines to his imagination through pure dynamism. Premiani was much more low-key and had a much more European style. It is restrained and sytematic, being a raitional ascetic he disiplined himself in details of his work.

Bunny God

A friend sent me this picture of Masea Motorsports in her stay in Nicaragua. What I find fascinating is the image of Helmet Bunny. You can see variations of it in Rada #3 and also here
http://beingjakekujava.blogspot.com/2009/07/bondage-bunny-and-rada.html
That's all the information that I care to know about it as i can easily search the net, but I think in this case it's better to let the mystery remain.

Fingertip. 24 hour comic

I'm not a huge fan of doing a 24 page comic in 24 hours. It can get tiresome after the 16th hour and the work becomes water down . But if I do it on Oct 3, this image would be the vocal point of the story. I love the image of duck who is morph into a boat, thou I hope I can find a strong storyline to fit within the comic.

Happy Birthday Samantha!

There she is standing inside Khan's Mongolian restaurant in St Paul, Mn.
My little sister who just turned 21 is one of nicest people you will ever meet. She gets this trait from our mom and because she is just a kind and deserving person I gave her the Kiss painting.

She just sent me an email linking me to an episode of Top Chef that she was in, TWICE! The chefs cook for the men and women of the United States military. So, I will watch it today expecting her cute face popping up helping the chefs prep up the meals. j/k

The wars of 1812 page 4

I found a copy of The Wars of 1812 page 4 last weekend that went missing, when I posted the story a month ago. Decided to add it for today and include the blue tones to the art. I always enjoy the panel on the left, eyes bug out ready for the battle.
